Most people know what a Guide Dog does, but people often wonder about the work of a registered Hearing Dog. Joanna’s talk about the organisation 'Hearing Dogs for Deaf People' provides an insight into the work of their dogs.
Joanna is deaf, and although modern hearing aids provide some level of hearing, she is dependent on Hearing Dog 'Marshall' (a Cocker Spaniel) to alert her to all the sounds she misses - everyday sounds like an alarm clock and doorbell, and vital sounds like emergency alarms. Marshall has transformed her life, giving her both independence and companionship. When out and about, his smart uniform with the official Assistance Dog logo permits him to accompany her wherever she goes, and this has given her confidence – Marshall is also a great conversation starter
